need family portrait sessions! Back in September we had our very own family portraits taken by the fabulous Jean Smith Photography! This was only the second time we’ve done an official family portrait session and the first time as a complete (read that one again grandparents) family of four. Wow I am SOOO glad we did it. I should say this wasn’t penny’s for us. I admire Jean’s talent, love her style and knew I wanted images of our family through her eyes. I planned and saved up for this session well before it happened.
As a Mom: I’m rarely ever in pictures, can I get an amen? Well, I’ll be honest and say I’m not the first to jump into a picture either BUT on a good hair day I would like my children to remember what the heck I looked like before I was that old lady in the corner rambling about how easy you kids have it…”When I was a kid we didn’t have tv remotes, cell phones or teleporting .”
It is PRICELESS to me to have beautiful, high quality, pieces of art to hang in my home of the people I love most in the world, to look at everyday. It makes me happy. It makes me smile. Even on the days when I’m a big fat crab and I’m not amused by the irony that I’m super tired and yet the baby won’t take a flipping nap.
And because life is too short. We all know people who’ve left this world way too soon. If you could go back and even take one more “nice” picture with them or of them…you would. And the cost, the effort or even that five pounds you’d like to lose, wouldn’t be an issue.
As a Photographer: Being on the other side of the camera made me a better photographer! It reminded me just how much work and stress (I won’t embarrass myself by telling you how many times I shopped looking for an outfit) goes into the session from the clients side. I try and use this knowledge to make the whole process as stress free as I possibly can! I remind myself before every session that you stressed, saved and want to hang these images on your walls. I’m human so sometimes I’m tired, cold or don’t feel well but if I am standing in front of you with my camera, know that I will be on my game for you!
So in the words of the famous Nike campaign, “Just do it”. Do it as often as you can afford it, save for it or splurge on it. Do it when your kids are little. Do it when they are big. Do it before you lose that five pounds and do it again after (I know some good gyms). Do it with a photographer who’s work you LOVE (I hope that’s me, and if not, still do it) at least once. A portrait session is something that, with the right photographer, you won’t regret.
Here are some of the images from our session hanging in our home!
A 60″x40″ canvas wrap in our family room
Left: 20″x16″ prints in the family room. Right: A 60″x40″ canvas in the hall by the front door.
If you saw Sutton’s birthday post you saw this image already. We did hang this canvas since this image. It’s a 48″x36″.
Sadly Finn’s room doesn’t have any wall space but I did find a spot for one small 8″x10″ framed print.
peace & pictures,
